MACBETH
1. Give a brief account of the "Banquet Scene" in "Macbeth".
After Macbeth becomes king, he constantly lives in fear of losing his ill-gotten power. The witches' prediction that Banquo's descendants will be the future king makes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth very uneasy. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth conspire to kill Banquo and his son. To this end, they hold a banquet where they invite the chief lords, including Banquo and his son Fleance.
Macbeth arranges some hired assassins who kill Banquo on his way to attend the banquet but his son manages to escape. In the banquet hall, Macbeth mourns Banquo's absence in a peaceful tone, while Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost sitting on the empty chair reserved for Banquo.
Distraught, Macbeth begins to act like a lunatic. But Lady Macbeth tactfully handles the situation and bids farewell to the guests, fearing that the horrors of Duncan's murder may be revealed. This "Banquet Scene" represents the first public revelation of Macbeth's guilt and the last aid extended by Lady Macbeth to her husband.
2.Bring out the significance of the opening scene of "Macbeth".
The opening scene of the same play plays an important role. It sets the course of action for a play. The play Macbeth begins with the return of two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo, victorious from a fierce battle and their meeting with the three witches.Encounters with otherworldly beings amid rain and thunder inhabit a ghostly atmosphere and hint at the drama's anarchy. The strange appearance of the mysterious sisters and their antics hint at their sinister ambitions and overall moral anarchy.
Although the first scene is brief, its audience is aware of what is about to happen. The witches foretell Macbeth and Banquo's future and induce temptation in Macbeth. But Banquo does not value their fortune telling and considers them to be agents of darkness who often betray people.
Macbeth believes their words and this leads to his downfall. Thus, the first scene presents the main idea of the play which revolves around the chaos that has arisen after Macbeth becomes king.
3. Discuss the character of Lady Macbeth.
Shakespeare uses many lady characters in the negative role but Lady Macbeth is more strong.
She is more ambitious about to make his husband the king of Scotland. In fact, some critics also criticize her as the fourth witch in "Macbeth".she instantly planes to murder Duncan and forces Macbeth to do that. She also managed the situation with a very gentle manner when Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo at the banquet hall.We can say that Lady Macbeth is more responsible for Macbeth's fatal destiny. At last she committed suicide for her sin.
4.What did the three witches say to Macbeth and Banquo on their way back from winning the battle?
The dramatic cryptic utterances of the three witches at the beginning of the play provide a clue to the chaotic events of the play's story. When Macbeth and Banquo were returning from battle, three strange-looking figures blocked their path. They made some prophecies about the commanders of Scotland. The first witch addressed Macbeth as Thane of 'Glamish'.The second witch called him Thane of 'Cawdor'. Finally the third witch prophesied that Macbeth would become the King of Scotland.
Banquo wonders if the witches have anything to say about him.So the witches turned to him and enigmatically declared that, "To be lesser than Macbeth and greater, not so happy but much happier." Before disappearing, the unearthly sisters prophesy that Banquo himself would never rule as king of Scotland, but that his descendants would.
5. Sketch the character of Macbeth.
