THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

                     THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

1. Explain the significance of the title of the story THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

By discussing the subject matter of the COMEDY OF ERRORS, we may judge the propriety of its name. The basic story formula revolves around two pairs of identical twins who are separated from each other and happen to meet at the same place. One pair of twins was named Antipholus and the other pair was named Dromio. This creates a massive confusion. These confusions lead to false accusations of marital infidelity. The story of Dromio and Antipholus' dinner at Aadriana's house, the incident of the gold necklace, and encountering the strange situation of the younger Antipholus near Ephesus. Finally all the confusion and misunderstandings are resolved when two pairs of twins, Antipholus and Dromio, come face to face and shock everyone around them. The audience witnesses the dialogue throughout the play and the many unintended blunders the main characters fall into.

That's why this title is perfect in every way.

2. Why did Aegeon come to Ephesus? What danger did he face there?

After two years of not having heard of the younger Antipholus, his anxious father went out in search of him, and thus arrived at Ephesus.

Aegeon, an old merchant of Syracuse, was found on the streets of Ephesus and presented to the duke's court, where he had to pay a ransom of 1,000 marks for his life or face death.Aegeon had no money, and the duke had no power to change the laws of the land, so the duke ordered him executed according to law.But before executing him, the Duke asks Aegeon to tell the story of his life and his reason for coming to Ephesus. The Duke's heart was deeply moved by Aegeon's life story, and so he gave Aegeon a day to arrange the fine. In Ephesus, as Aegeon did not know anyone, he received no help from anyone, so he went with the jailer to spend the night in his custody. These are the dangers that Aegeon faced when he came to Ephesus.

3. What did Younger Antipholus and Younger Dromio experience at Adriana's house?

Adriana mistook the Younger Antipholus for her husband since the two brothers looked alike and brought him home for dinner. She scolds the Younger Antipholus for rejecting her as a wife. She suspected him of having an illicit relationship with a woman. The Younger Antipholus was greatly surprised at these events but failed to convince Adriana that he was not her husband. However Younger Antipholus was attracted to her younger sister Luciana in Adrian's house. The Younger Dromio experienced similar confusion when a cook-maid, named Dowsabel claims him as her husband. This reversal of roles baffled both the Younger Antipholus and the Younger Dromio.

After dinner they could not bear this any longer and at the first opportunity they ran away from home.

4. Narrate the gold chain episode in "The Comedy of Errors."

The gold chain phenomenon is the result of mistaken personal identity. The gold chain was actually ordered by the Elder Antipholus as a gift for his wife. After leaving Adriana's house, the Younger Antipholus and the Younger Dromio were met by a goldsmith who forcibly gave the gold necklace to Antipholus of Syracuse, mistaking him for Antipholus of Ephesus. The confusion worsened when the goldsmith was arrested as he failed to repay the debt. Seeing Antipholus of Ephesus on the way, the goldsmith demanded the price of the chain, which the Elder Antipholus did not receive. The argument between the two of them culminated in their arrest. The plot of the main story becomes more complicated when the lady, with whom the Elder Antipholus dined the night before and promised a gold chain, met the Younger Antipholus. When the Younger Antipholus refused to give the chain, the lady demanded the gold ring she gave him, which the Younger Antipholus was unable to give.Younger Antipholus was completely shocked by this incident and ran away calling the unknown lady a witch. The lady then went straight to Adrian to report her husband's madness. This lady's words caused further confusion in Adriana's mind. The incident of the gold chain helps to increase the comedy of errors and fun.
