W. Shakespeare
1. "The inspiration that the youth got from the ladies worked wonders for him..... " Describe the wrestling match between Oliver and Orlando in the light of this statement.
The wrestling match helps to develop the play. Orlando is about to face the best wrestlers backed by the King. Duke Frederick, fearing that Orlando might lose his life in this unequal contest, begs Celia and Rosalind to dissuade him from participating in the contest. But the women's sympathetic words make Orlando more determined. Celia wants the inexperienced young man not to get hurt, while Rosalind is more concerned about the unknown young man as they are both victims of bad luck. This inspiration from the young women makes the young man more fearless and he defeats his opponents. The wrestling match plays a very important role since that is when the love story between Rosalind and Orlando begins. The moment Duke Frederick learns Orlando's paternity, he can no longer be satisfied with Orlando's skills since he is the son of the exiled duke's friend Roland the Boyce.
2. "When all the people were eagerly waiting for a miracle to happen..." What was the miracle? and how did it happen?
The eagerly awaited miracle is the long-awaited meeting of his daughter with the exiled duke in the Forest of Arden and the marriage of his beloved Rosalind to fulfill Orlando's wishes. On the day Oliver and Aliena are to be married, Ganymede promises to use a special magical power he learned from his uncle, if Orlando truly loves Rosalind. The duke was astonished to hear of Rosalind's coming to him, and demanded whether this miracle would really happen. As Orlando wonders what to answer, Ganymede asks the Duke if he consents to Orland's marriage to Rosalind, and the Duke agrees. When Orlando is asked he eagerly says he agrees. Later Ganymede and Aliena went inside the cottage to reveal their disguises and emerged as Rosalind and Celia. Rosalind then takes her father's blessing and narrates the whole incident to him. The Duke burst into tears of great joy at getting his daughter back and blessed them. Then the two couples got married in the forest.
3. Sketch the character of Orlando.
Orlando is the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys, a victim of cruelty and abuse by his elder brother Oliver. Orlando was not given a good education but nevertheless he grew up to be a moral man. That he is brave, full of energy and can become fearsome when the situation calls for it is proved when he defeats the experienced wrestler and saves his brother from the clutches of a lioness. Rosalind is forced to fall in love with him. Although he is the victim of his brother's hatred, he saves his brother which shows how kind and powerful a man he is. He is a true romantic who writes love poems for Rosalind. His love for Rosalind is pure and it is shown that even in adverse circumstances he does not forget her but desperately longs for her love. He gives people the respect they deserve.
4. How was the banished Duke's life in the forest Arden.
The Senior Duke of Arden took his exile as a positive attitude and lived a quiet life with his followers. They lived like the Robinhood of England. During summers he rested under the shade of the trees and watched the fun games of forest deer. The elder Duke felt the drudgery of jungle life in winter yet he preferred the cool breeze to the irresponsibility and ingratitude of the royal people and considered this breeze his true mentor. He also talked about the benefits of living in the forest, citing medicine extracted from the head of poisonous frogs. He learned from nature and found life in trees, scriptures in streams, religious teachings in stones and love in everything.
